Ba Sing Se is protected by two layers of walls: the outer and inner. The outer wall is the largest man-made structure in the world and the inner wall has never before been beached. Both walls are also home to many of the Earth Kingdom's military forces.

Located between the walls, the agrarian zone is inhabited primarily by farmers. Many farmers live in the Lower Ring and exit daily to tend to their farms. When an earthbender is born among them they are often sent away to hone their bending skills and bring wealth to their family.
